One of the things that I’ve discussed with a friend of mine who also grew up in Vancouver, is how things that feel like celebration of difference can sometimes be confused with snarky racism — and both are in the eyes of the beholders. But that doesn’t really do away with the fact that real mean-spirited racism does exist, and sometimes that tries to pass as not-that, and it can be really jarring.
